Once desired and loved but eventually discarded, the essential furniture item – the chair – has a long, rich and often poignant past.

Aesthetically, socially, politically, economically and technologically, this everyday item has experienced revolutionary change over the years. A colourful narrative of eight pre-loved chairs is revealed at this installation, paying homage to the diversity of stories that inform this work.

Sydney-based designers not only convey the rich history of these chairs, but thoughtfully reinterpret and revitalise each piece to bring it back to life. Contemporary design and bespoke beauty merge to transform a tired furniture piece into a work of art. With their notebooks in hand, the designers have recorded their concepts and inspirations over the course of the project – with their most intimate thoughts and unexpected design approach all on display at the Powerhouse Museum.

Participating designers: Andrew Simpson (Industrial Design), Chris Hardy (Industrial Design), Paul Garbett (Graphic Design), Cecilia Heffer (Textile Design), Chris Bosse (Architecture), Liesl Hazelton (Jewellery), Adam Goodrum (Industrial Design), Christina Waterson (Design & Architecture).
