In less than five years, bloggers like The Sartorialist, Susie Bubble and Garance Dore have changed how fashion is captured and critiqued. Harnessing the DIY charm and reach of new media technologies, the new guard is documenting ‘the street’ – subversive, cool, weird and wonderful. These suggest a shift of the fashion gaze from traditional arenas, like the runway and magazines.
At the same time designers, both established and avant-garde, are finding new ways to reach lovers of fashion. Karl Lagerfeld shows his wit on Twittter; Marc Jacobs snubs front-row celebrities for live internet streaming of the catwalk; Chanel woos Scorcese for a new TV commercial; Tom Ford takes on Hollywood with A Single Man; while Anna Wintour (The September Issue) and Valentino (The Last Emperor) let the cameras in behind closed doors. This talk considers some of the ways in which new media technologies are making fashion media far more accessible, voyeuristic and exciting than it has ever been.
This talk is by Dr Alex Munt and Dr Susie Khamis, both Lecturers in the Department of Media, Music & Cultural Studies at Macquarie University. In the last ten years, Alex has worked across the creative industries in Adelaide, London and Sydney with credits in short film, feature film and music video production. Susie has researched and written on advertising and branding over the last decade, in Australia and the UK.
