INTERACTIVATION STUDIO PROJECT DEMOS

The Interactivation Studio is a research laboratory for the design, investigation, invention and development of new ways of interacting with electronic technology. It is a flexible infrastructure which can be rearranged to suit a number of uses – from workshop, class room, test lab, exhibition space … During SD09 the studio welcomes visitors interested in the design of new interfaces, finished demonstrators and works-in-progress.

UTZON – SYDNEY ARCHITECTURE WALKS

Join architect Eoghan Lewis in this in-depth and textured portrait of enigmatic Danish architect Jørn Utzon. The walk discusses the sources of the architect’s deepest inspiration and charts the development of Utzon’s ideas and their realisation – from the poetic simplicity of his competition winning scheme, through nine tumultuous but unbelievably productive years as he slowly realised the platform, concrete shells and ceramic skin.

The walk cover the political events that led to Utzon’s undoing in the mid 1960s, discuss his unrealised 1960s interiors and focuses on two key collaborations: those with German acoustic engineers Cremer und Gabler and Sydney plywood manufacturer Ralph Symonds.

Taste the architecture and public art that materialises contemporary conditions and attitudes. They’re part of a heady urban narrative revealing the historic, political and topographic forces lapping at Sydney like its tides. The walk zooms in on two contrasting, yet complimentary structures by Italian architect Renzo Piano and Melbourne’s Denton Corker Marshall.

It looks at their specific connections to Sydney Opera House and the unique working methods and approach of its architect Jørn Utzon. The walk also takes in public art works by Janet Laurence, Kan Yasuda and Tim Prentice.
