Sydney Design 2010 is set to stimulate and create conversation around design. This year’s festival theme ‘Tell us a story’ pays homage to the diversity of stories that inform the work of so many designers.

Festival highlights at the Powerhouse Museum this year include the popular Young Blood: Designers Market, as well as local speakers and an international guest, tours and workshops.

A wealth of stories will be enjoyed in the Museum’s key festival exhibition titled Creating the look: fashion, fantasy, fiction featuring Bruno and Hazel Benini’s elegantly crafted fashion photographs. The Melbourne-based fashion photographer and his wife combined careful styling, composition and design to create some of Australia’s most memorable fashion images.

I want to offer an apology to the many people disappointed by the experience of visiting this year’s markets. On Friday night we experienced unprecedented numbers, far exceeding those of previous years. Whilst this says something exciting about interest in the work of our young designers, our capacity to respond fell well short of what visitors expect of the Powerhouse.

This in no way reflects on the stallholders and their products. The crowds in the market space did not allow for a pleasant experience, and it became necessary to turn visitors away in order to maintain a reasonable level of visitor safety. Whilst not excusing this, we had chosen this year to relocate the market indoors, and to also feature the new Artefact H10515 installation. The space allocated to the market proved inadequate, and our crowd control planning did not match the overwhelming response.

For this we offer our apologies. We are reviewing all aspects of our planning and presentation of the Young Blood event to ensure the Christmas market on 28 November has a range of quality products and is a satisfying experience for visitors.

Please consider completing our customer survey for Sydney Design 09.

Paula Rogers, Managing Director The Fair-trading Company, is a strong advocate of improved working conditions for overseas workers in developing countries. She has 25 years experience in international trade of consumer goods, servicing the USA, Europe and Australia markets. While worked in Hong Kong (1995 to 2003), Rogers managed the social compliance of 6,000 factories in over 80 countries worldwide, for some of the world’s largest international retailers. She sits on the Executive Board of the Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand (FTAANZ).

Eckhard Kemmerer is a scientist and marketing executive with 20 years’ management experience in consumer and business products and services. He now runs the innovation consultancy, Apogee International, and has developed his LifeArt Enviroboard coffins. Manufactured using fibres recovered from recycled cardboard boxes and sugarcane waste, the coffins use cornstarch glue to make them strong and lightweight. “By using less material to make our product,” explains Kemmerer, “we have set the benchmark for emissions from cremations.”

Daily Designer, 12.00pm (free with Museum admission): Cindy Lee-Davies, Kate Mitchell and Katherine Brickman.

MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Liane Rossler is a co-founder, designer and director of Dinosaur Designs, which began in 1985. While the design house operates locally, it also exports worldwide. Supporting environmentally sustainable initiatives, Dinosaur Designs takes responsibility for their environmental footprint. Rossler has been trained by Al Gore as a Climate Project ambassador, and gives talks to the design and architecture community. She’s also a co-founder of the Sydney-based social group, GreenUps, and an ambassador for the 1 Million Women campaign.

Phil Stubbs is an environmental journalist, airing stories on radio 2SER and producing The Environment Show podcast which launched in 2008. The other hat Stubbs wears is as a lecturer in media, working in the School of Communication Arts at the University of Western Sydney. Here, his research and consultancy work is in the use of new media to promote sustainable development. He is one of the founding committee members of GreenUps, a leading green social network based in Sydney.

David Gravina is the founder and creative director of Digital Eskimo. He established this agency in 2001 to create social change using sustainability principles along with the power of design and digital technologies. Highlights have included award-winning campaigns for Your Rights at Work, and projects for Amnesty International and the Sydney Symphony.

John Eussen has been a leader in the textiles and interiors industry for more than 20 years, specialising in sustainable and environmentally friendly decor. He worked in high-profile management roles before leaving the corporate world to pursue his penchant for interiors. His passion for a sustainable future has since led him into a raft of inspired roles, from being an Al Gore Ambassador for the Climate Change Project to working as a consultant for global sustainability conferences.

Cindy-Lee Davies is the designer behind Melbourne-based design house, Lightly, which opened in 2005. Lightly also has a sustainable range called dEco, which consists of recycled cork tableware and the Paperback storage unit made from recycled cardboard.

Greedy Hen is an art collective and studio, housing the collaborative works of illustrators and art directors Katherine Brickman and Kate Mitchell. Greedy Hen devises projects intent on creating images alluding to a playful black humour, unwritten fables, or off-kilter sinister elements.
MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Katie Patrick began as an environmental engineer and project manager but left to pursue her passion for furthering the concept of ‘green’ as a landmark brand. Featured as the first environmental CEO on the front cover of Business Review Weekly, Patrick runs Green Pages, Australia’s largest sustainable media organisation which produces the Annual Eco Directory, Quarterly Lifestyle Magazine and a website. Patrick is also involved in environmental advocacy through her role as vice chair of the Property Council Sustainability Committee.

Rachel Bending is a pioneer in sustainable fashion and interior design practices. As a Byron Bay-based designer, she founded Slingfings, followed by Bird Textiles in 2006 with showrooms now in Byron Bay and Sydney’s Surry Hills. Bird garments are made from SKAL-certified organic fabrics with patterns designed in-house and hand-printed in Australia using water-based dyes. All products in the homewares and lifestyle fashion ranges are manufactured using 100 per cent renewable solar power.

Matt Perry started his career at M&C Saatchi in London and New York, working on brands including British Airways and Rolls-Royce. He then moved to Australia via South and Central America where he became concerned with environmental issues. In Australia, Perry established a sustainable forestry business in Queensland, became managing director of bellamyhayden Melbourne and studied at the Centre for Sustainable Leadership. With Ben Peacock, he co-founded Republic of Everyone, focusing on making sustainability relevant and engaging.

Ben Peacock is a writer, animal lover and cancer survivor. After moving to Bangkok in 2005 for work in the advertising industry, he was first diagnosed with cancer. Following an amazing recovery, Peacock co-founded Republic of Everyone, an agency dedicated to using the tools of advertising and social media to create a better world. Apart from winning the Animal Action Award, Peacock also became spokesperson for the Cancer Council and the author of Lessons From My Left Testicle.

Kent Gration worked as a graphic designer in Melbourne and Brisbane for eight years before establishing Integration Studio in 2004. This multidisciplinary design company works with graphic, product and furniture design. Gration established Integration Studio to address social and environmental issues through design using a multifaceted approach. His current furniture range, Wambamboo, addresses growing concerns regarding the overuse of non-renewable, polluting materials in the furniture industry and their long-term environmental and sociological effects.
