2 July 2009 – Sydney Design 09 is set to challenge our perceptions of sustainability through a unique creative platform and restaurant Eat Green Design, presented by the Powerhouse Museum in partnership with Collaborate.
The vision of Cilla Maden of Collaborate, Eat Green Design is a sustainable temporary exhibition, restaurant and ideas incubator, hosting diners, guest speakers, and the latest ‘green’ products from 1 to 12 August. This networking and hospitality hub will emphasise awareness building on all levels about ideas of sustainable consumption.
Eat Green Design has been designed and purpose-built by award-winning architect Hannah Tribe of Tribe Studio, Surry Hills, and demonstrates best-practice principles of sustainable architecture and interior design. It also showcases a selection of innovative, sustainable products from independent and emerging eco-designers around Australia including Design By Them, Toby Horrocks, Lightly, Spaceleft and ISM Objects.
Museum visitors will have the chance to book Eat Green Design for breakfast or dinner and enjoy a delicious menu of bio-dynamic and locally organic sourced food, devised by renowned chef Jared Ingersoll of Danks Street Depot. The meals will bring people together around a table and get them talking about sustainable living, while sharing platters of seasonal, sustainable and ethical produce.
A stimulating line-up of guest speakers talking about sustainable business, living, lifestyle design and architecture will feature at the breakfast and dinners. Speakers include David Trubridge, Paul McGillick, printmaker Sandy de Beyer, Ben Peacock, Kent Gration and eco meets retro Rachel Bending from Slingflings.
Visitors can also drop in to Eat Green Design during the day for a coffee and catch talks at midday by designers involved with the project and other guest speakers. Midday speakers include award-winning furniture and lighting designer David Trubride, Kent Gration from Brisbane and furniture designer Arthur Koutoulas of Sydney.
Local designers have been specially commissioned to transform discarded objects into functional and desirable interior products to create new tableware called NEW TO YOU for Eat Green Design breakfasts and dinners. The range is designed by Oliver Smith, Lana Alsamir-Diamond, Stefan Lie and Rod Walden, Janine Brody, Suzanne Boccalatte, Holly Phillips, Katherine Brickman and Kate Mitchell of Greedy Hen, Elke Kramer, Studio Skinky and Kristian Aus.
NEW TO YOU limited edition pieces will be available for purchase at the Powerhouse Museum’s Young Blood: Designers Market, Friday and Saturday 14 and 15 August.
The Eat Green Design project serves to investigate, uncover and make transparent the ‘whole-system’ behind design. It demonstrates how sustainability does not compromise design aesthetic or value, but in fact adds a level of sophistication to the design agenda.
Eat Green Design is part of Sydney Design 09, celebrating local and international design with a diverse program of more than 70 events running 1 – 16 August. Visit www.sydneydesign.com.au for more information about Eat Green Design and for the complete festival program.
