Media Release: Showcase of the most outstanding design and innovation at the Powerhouse Museum

2 July 2009 – The world’s first power-heated wetsuit is one of the outstanding examples of design and innovation from the 2009 Australian International Design Awards on display at the Powerhouse Museum from 31 July.

Many of the products selected by the Museum from the award’s finalists this year are designed to improve health or encourage greener living. Innovations include: a transportable sink for the re-use of water around the home, a gas cylinder made from 100% recyclable materials, an asthma puffer with a retractable mouthpiece, and a hearing aid combined with a cochlear implant.

The Grael polysomnogram device for testing sleep disorders received this year’s Powerhouse Museum Design Award, given to a design with the potential to make a significant improvement to the quality of the environment, health or wellbeing.

“The Powerhouse Museum Design Award rewards excellence in an Australian design that not only harnesses science and technology, but also has the ability to positively impact our lives,” said Erika Dicker, Curator of Products Design (acting).

“The Grael has received the award for its smart and streamlined design that integrates innovation, sustainability, and user awareness. It is a product with the potential to make a significant impact to the quality of health and wellbeing for those suffering sleep disorders.”

A selection of designs from the student category of the awards will also be displayed, including the Switch Commuter Bike by Robert Dumaresq. Robert’s winning innovation is a full sized bike which folds quickly using one smooth motion for easy portability between rides.

The Australian International Design Awards exhibition is on display at the Powerhouse Museum from 31 July 2009 until June 2010 (free with Museum admission), and is part of Sydney Design 09.
