MORE ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Katie Patrick began as an environmental engineer and project manager but left to pursue her passion for furthering the concept of ‘green’ as a landmark brand. Featured as the first environmental CEO on the front cover of Business Review Weekly, Patrick runs Green Pages, Australia’s largest sustainable media organisation which produces the Annual Eco Directory, Quarterly Lifestyle Magazine and a website. Patrick is also involved in environmental advocacy through her role as vice chair of the Property Council Sustainability Committee.

Rachel Bending is a pioneer in sustainable fashion and interior design practices. As a Byron Bay-based designer, she founded Slingfings, followed by Bird Textiles in 2006 with showrooms now in Byron Bay and Sydney’s Surry Hills. Bird garments are made from SKAL-certified organic fabrics with patterns designed in-house and hand-printed in Australia using water-based dyes. All products in the homewares and lifestyle fashion ranges are manufactured using 100 per cent renewable solar power.

Matt Perry started his career at M&C Saatchi in London and New York, working on brands including British Airways and Rolls-Royce. He then moved to Australia via South and Central America where he became concerned with environmental issues. In Australia, Perry established a sustainable forestry business in Queensland, became managing director of bellamyhayden Melbourne and studied at the Centre for Sustainable Leadership. With Ben Peacock, he co-founded Republic of Everyone, focusing on making sustainability relevant and engaging.

Ben Peacock is a writer, animal lover and cancer survivor. After moving to Bangkok in 2005 for work in the advertising industry, he was first diagnosed with cancer. Following an amazing recovery, Peacock co-founded Republic of Everyone, an agency dedicated to using the tools of advertising and social media to create a better world. Apart from winning the Animal Action Award, Peacock also became spokesperson for the Cancer Council and the author of Lessons From My Left Testicle.

John Eussen has been a leader in the textiles and interiors industry for more than 20 years, specialising in sustainable and environmentally friendly decor. He worked in high-profile management roles before leaving the corporate world to pursue his penchant for interiors. His passion for a sustainable future has since led him into a raft of inspired roles, from being an Al Gore Ambassador for the Climate Change Project to working as a consultant for global sustainability conferences.

Kent Gration worked as a graphic designer in Melbourne and Brisbane for eight years before establishing Integration Studio in 2004. This multidisciplinary design company works with graphic, product and furniture design. Gration established Integration Studio to address social and environmental issues through design using a multifaceted approach. His current furniture range, Wambamboo, addresses growing concerns regarding the overuse of non-renewable, polluting materials in the furniture industry and their long-term environmental and sociological effects.

Showcasing a stellar range of Australian furniture, lighting and product design conceived by emerging young designers, Workshopped 09 focuses on the work of designers that are ‘creating the future, inspiring, enhancing and making a difference’.

Established in 2001, Workshopped remains committed to assisting designers in the difficult process of taking a new product design from prototype to production and maintaining successful commercial relationships with industry and the marketplace. Sustain me: contemporary design explores the conventional role design and designers play in creating and developing a deeper understanding of sustainability. CULTURAL DESIGN: DAVID TRUBRIDGE
New Zealand designer David Trubridge addresses how ecodesign (however worthy) is not enough unless it also addresses some form of cultural/spiritual nourishment. Says Trubridge: “Design is looking for new meaning and relevance. In the past all cultures were defined and expressed by their artifacts and art… we too could find cultural and spiritual nourishment from long lasting objects and this may reduce the never-fulfilled craving for consumer goods.”

GLENN MURCUTT: ARCHITECTURE FOR PLACE

Glenn Murcutt’s groundbreaking designs are internationally recognised as being at the very forefront of contemporary architecture. His work is celebrated for its sustainability, harmony with the natural world, and resonance and unity with Australia’s diverse climate and topography.

This a special exhibition that reveals the way Murcutt crafts his projects, with a selection of ideas presented from initial sketch to detailed construction drawings, and final built work. A series of photographs by Anthony Browell completes the show.
