Fashioning Now looks at ways in which clothing is produced, used and discarded. Through a dynamic array of fashion garments, textile objects, photography, illustration and time-base media, Fashioning Now highlights the diversity of sustainable options being explored by designers, researchers and manufacturers, while predicting possible scenarios for a future fashion industry.

Meet and buy direct from the best design talent in the country. This year Young Blood is bigger and brighter than ever before and moves to the Museum’s Turbine Hall. Featuring fashion, furniture, jewellery, graphics, landscape and lighting design and more.

Young Blood is on Friday 14 August 6–9pm and Saturday 15 August 2009, 10am–5pm.

The curated market is a glimpse into the future, a critical launch pad for Australia’s talented young designers, as well as a vibrant must-visit market for the design-savvy shopper.

Share a drink at Friday night’s market or visit Inspired, the Museum’s permanent design exhibition on Saturday. Sounds specially mixed by Designer Muzik for Young Blood; and there’ll be a live action photo shoot by fashion photographer Hamish Ta-me, where visitors get the chance for a look behind the scenes as he documents hip-hop dancers.

Artefact H10515 is a life form that lives in a large display case. It moves, it breathes and it feeds on digital sources within and beyond the walls of the museum. Artefact H10515 is the creation of Craig Walsh, a leading Australian media artist with an international reputation for creating innovative and thought-provoking work. Walsh’s artificial life form is designed to disrupt and expand our expectations of a museum – as well evoke intrigue, contemplation and delight.

See the Powerhouse Museum’s selection from this year’s finalists in the Australian International Design Awards. This year designs are as diverse as a battery-heated wetsuit, foldable commuter bike, sleep disorder testing device and transportable sink.

The Australian International Design Awards are an important measure of design innovation in this country and proof that a better solution emerges when you apply a stringent design process.

FROM TRASH TO TREASURE: FASHIONING NOW

Aimed at secondary and tertiary students, the From Trash to Treasure workshops create fashion from what would otherwise be waste. The first workshop focuses on “upcycling” of discarded materials through textile manipulation and rich embellishment.

The second focuses on the garment creation; with inspirational support from industry professionals. The results will feature on the Fashioning Now website and are for the students to keep. The program has been assisted by the New South Wales Government through its Environmental Trust

INTENSIVE SHOEMAKING COURSE

A five-day closely directed learning experience, focusing students on applying the techniques and skills necessary to design and make one pair of custom shoes. The course covers pattern making/design, cutting clicking patterns and leather, upper stitching, lasting and finishing. All the steps required for making your own custom shoe.

Showcasing a stellar range of Australian furniture, lighting and product design conceived by emerging young designers, Workshopped 09 focuses on the work of designers that are ‘creating the future, inspiring, enhancing and making a difference’.

Established in 2001, Workshopped remains committed to assisting designers in the difficult process of taking a new product design from prototype to production and maintaining successful commercial relationships with industry and the marketplace. Designers exhibiting at WORKSHOPPED 09 include Tomek Archer, Charles Wilson, Gary Galego, David Knott and collaborators Ueno Fukutoshi and Akira Isogawa.

SUSTAIN ME: CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

The word “sustainability” is in danger of losing its tangible value and status as a universal catch-cry from chronic over use. Sustain me: contemporary design explores the conventional role design and designers play in creating and developing a deeper understanding of sustainability. CULTURAL DESIGN: DAVID TRUBRIDGE
New Zealand designer David Trubridge addresses how ecodesign (however worthy) is not enough unless it also addresses some form of cultural/spiritual nourishment. Says Trubridge: “Design is looking for new meaning and relevance. In the past all cultures were defined and expressed by their artifacts and art… we too could find cultural and spiritual nourishment from long lasting objects and this may reduce the never-fulfilled craving for consumer goods.”

ALTER EGO, THE OTHER I

Like to play somebody you couldn’t possibly be in the real world? Create an alternative personality or persona? Become your own alter ego? This exhibition invites designers across various disciplines to create an alter ego as a means to push boundaries, explore ideas and create works that they may never have dared to if they were creating as “themselves”.

Exhibiting designers, artists and jewellers include Melinda Young, Sean O’Connell, Mark Vaarwerk, Lisa Furno, Scott Rosen, Alice Potter, Kelly Robson and Lauren Reid. Curated by Zoe Brand.
