Daily Designer, 12.00pm (free with Museum admission): Oliver Smith.

Oliver Smith is best known as a silversmith specialising in hammer techniques. His favourite of these, hot forging, is most suitable for making cutlery. As a result, his practice is focused on the table and inspired by the conviviality of the shared meal. Smith combines a vigorous craft and design practice with lecturing at Sydney College of the Arts. He’s worked for silversmiths and metalworkers in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, Germany and England, and his handcrafted pieces are exhibited internationally.

Artefact H10515 is the creation of Craig Walsh, a leading Australian media artist with an international reputation for creating innovative and thought-provoking work. Walsh’s artificial life form is designed to disrupt and expand our expectations of a museum – as well evoke intrigue, contemplation and delight.

Located in the heart of Surry Hills’ design precinct, metalab contemporary jewellery gallery is offering a unique workshop experience. Learn the art of jewellery making with foundation techniques. In this course of two sessions held on consecutive Saturday’s you will be given a workshop orientation and learn fundamental skills such as saw piercing, filing, soldering, sanding and polishing. These skills are used to produce silver and gold jewellery. You will employ these techniques to produce a ring out of silver.

Showcasing a stellar range of Australian furniture, lighting and product design conceived by emerging young designers, Workshopped 09 focuses on the work of designers that are ‘creating the future, inspiring, enhancing and making a difference’.

Established in 2001, Workshopped remains committed to assisting designers in the difficult process of taking a new product design from prototype to production and maintaining successful commercial relationships with industry and the marketplace. Designers exhibiting at WORKSHOPPED 09 include Tomek Archer, Charles Wilson, Gary Galego, David Knott and collaborators Ueno Fukutoshi and Akira Isogawa.

Sustain me: contemporary design explores the conventional role design and designers play in creating and developing a deeper understanding of sustainability. CULTURAL DESIGN: DAVID TRUBRIDGE
New Zealand designer David Trubridge addresses how ecodesign (however worthy) is not enough unless it also addresses some form of cultural/spiritual nourishment. Says Trubridge: “Design is looking for new meaning and relevance. In the past all cultures were defined and expressed by their artifacts and art… we too could find cultural and spiritual nourishment from long lasting objects and this may reduce the never-fulfilled craving for consumer goods.”

DESIGNING WITH LETTERPRESS

Explore traditional and experimental methods of designing and printing with letterpress. Letterpress is a traditional form of print-design manufacture that transfers the inked surface of raised wood and metal letters to paper on a hand press. Over five consecutive Saturdays students will explore the contemporary applications of this method and the allure of the handmade in current graphic design practices.

Learn to draw like a fashion designer. Using the celebrated ESMOD Méthode form Paris, participants are introduced to fashion illustration fundamentals. The fashion figure, The fashion face, Clothing a figure, Basic rendering techniques.
All these topics are covered using simple and successful techniques of the ESMOD’s Méthode’s. These techniques include the logical ‘break down’ of the fashion figure using line, tone, texture and proportion to create effective fashion images.
