Challenge your perceptions of sustainability through this unique creative platform and restaurant.

Brunch, 9.30am (bookings essential): With Jared Ingersoll, Chef/Director Danks Street Depot, and Hannah Tribe, Director Tribe Studio Architects. Ingersoll devised the menu for Eat Green Design, and Tribe designed the temporary restaurant.

Daily Designer, 12.00pm (free with Museum admission): Tom Barker.

Jared Ingersoll trained as a chef in London at renowned restaurants such as Mezzo, Hilaire and The Square. After travelling to Sydney, he became head chef at Bayswater Brasserie and in 2002 opened his own cafe and cocktail bar, Danks Street Depot, in Waterloo. Later this year, Danks Street Depot will launch at the Sydney International Airport. Ingersoll is committed to ethical and sustainable food principles, representing the restaurant industry on the Nature Conservation Council’s ‘Nice Choice’ sustainable seafood project.

Hannah Tribe founded Tribe Studio in 2003, a Sydney-based architect firm, that designs beautiful houses, interiors, retail spaces and public buildings. Environmental sustainability is seamlessly integrated into the design process. Hannah Tribe studied architecture at Cornell University, USA, and Sydney University, graduating with First Class (Hons) and the University Medal. In 2008, the firm won the AA Award for Unbuilt Architecture for an urban design and residential masterplan scheme. Tribe is also a painter, exhibiting in Sydney.

Tom Barker spent more than 20 years in the UK working on world-acclaimed creative projects, including the London Eye ferris wheel, the sustainable Greenwich Millennium Village, and a Turner Prize shortlisted interactive artwork with Langlands & Bell. Qualified in design, architecture and engineering, he moved to Sydney in 2008 to help develop sustainable affordable housing. Barker is currently a professor at the University of Technology in Sydney and a visiting professor to RMIT University’s Design Institute in Melbourne.

Artefact H10515 is a life form that lives in a large display case. It moves, it breathes and it feeds on digital sources within and beyond the walls of the museum. Artefact H10515 is the creation of Craig Walsh, a leading Australian media artist with an international reputation for creating innovative and thought-provoking work. Walsh’s artificial life form is designed to disrupt and expand our expectations of a museum – as well evoke intrigue, contemplation and delight.

TAKE A BALL OF THREAD

Based on Melinda Young’s jewellery project of the same name, you’re invited to make a piece of jewellery using a ball of sewing thread. The premise is simple: by using a common domestic material, engaging with and re-working simple craft techniques (and perhaps inventing some new ones), sewing thread becomes the vehicle for fantastic wearable creations, either as a material in itself or in combination with other found objects.

Showcasing a stellar range of Australian furniture, lighting and product design conceived by emerging young designers, Workshopped 09 focuses on the work of designers that are ‘creating the future, inspiring, enhancing and making a difference’.

Established in 2001, Workshopped remains committed to assisting designers in the difficult process of taking a new product design from prototype to production and maintaining successful commercial relationships with industry and the marketplace. Designers exhibiting at WORKSHOPPED 09 include Tomek Archer, Charles Wilson, Gary Galego, David Knott and collaborators Ueno Fukutoshi and Akira Isogawa.

Marcus Piper is Joint Creative Director of one8one7 – a creative agency based on the south coast on NSW with an international client base. They have seen first hand the benefits of working internationally and the effect the digital age has had on achieving international recognition ‘remotely’.

SUSTAIN ME: CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

The word “sustainability” is in danger of losing its tangible value and status as a universal catch-cry from chronic over use. Sustain me: contemporary design explores the conventional role design and designers play in creating and developing a deeper understanding of sustainability. CULTURAL DESIGN: DAVID TRUBRIDGE
New Zealand designer David Trubridge addresses how ecodesign (however worthy) is not enough unless it also addresses some form of cultural/spiritual nourishment. Says Trubridge: “Design is looking for new meaning and relevance. In the past all cultures were defined and expressed by their artifacts and art… we too could find cultural and spiritual nourishment from long lasting objects and this may reduce the never-fulfilled craving for consumer goods.”

GLENN MURCUTT: ARCHITECTURE FOR PLACE

Glenn Murcutt’s groundbreaking designs are internationally recognised as being at the very forefront of contemporary architecture. His work is celebrated for its sustainability, harmony with the natural world, and resonance and unity with Australia’s diverse climate and topography.

This a special exhibition that reveals the way Murcutt crafts his projects, with a selection of ideas presented from initial sketch to detailed construction drawings, and final built work. A series of photographs by Anthony Browell completes the show.
