International trend forecaster and design expert, Amanda Talbot, from SnOOp Global talks about the future of craft. To understand the future, it is important to be grounded in the past, and to learn from it. Rather than being merely nostalgic about the past, some Revivalists are digging deeper, going further back in time and culture. They are rediscovering ancient, forgotten skills, crafts and materials.
Luxury brands are creating fresh dialogue with consumers by celebrating provenance and showcasing artisanal values. Gucci recently flew some of its specialist leather workers into stores in Tokyo and New York for ‘live’ workshops. Miuccia Prada has set the tone with her launch of dedicated labelling ‘Made In…’
But is it too late? We are at a critical point as the final generation with specialist craft skills retire, often with no one to pass their knowledge onto.
This talk considers some of the ways in which industry can help small makers to carry on their crafts. We discuss the tastes, attitudes and behaviour of the modern consumer and explore how the Australian public can be persuaded to buy local, realising the value of unique hand crafted products.
Amanda Talbot makes her Australian television debut as a Judge on TOP DESIGN coming soon to Channel 9.
